One thing I learned today: That I need to start a more writing-intensive blog because, apparently, I have a lot to say these days. Today's food for thought...

The thing that is bothering me with this debate on whether or not Beyonce is a feminist is the repeated comment I see that if a woman is being overtly sexual (particularly in a performance context like she is), she is promoting the objectification of women and is either guilty for doing it knowingly, or is fooling and somehow harming herself without even realizing it. And I can think of few things more patriarchal and misogynistic, or more divisive to feminism, than claiming women don't know what's best for themselves. Frankly, it seems very akin to victim blaming in rape to me. Objectification of women is a HUGE problem - so why aren't we focusing on the ones doing the objectifying instead of suggesting women censor how they express themselves? There is no acceptable line of sexual expression at which men (and even other women) will stop objectifying women - it is not up to women to censor themselves to prevent objectification. It is up to us as a society to demand that the objectifiers to stop this behavior. I also don't see this level of "concern" for male artists who capitalize on their sexuality and aesthetic. We don't sit around fretting that they must be psychologically damaged in some way or don't understand what they are doing to themselves or their gender. So I call bullshit and say that the only people fooling themselves here are those who think it's feminist to try to exclude and put down a woman because she behaves in a way that hasn't traditionally been associated with feminism.

One thing I'm grateful for: So many kick-ass women in my life.

One thing I learned today: What I want for myself in 2014 - and since part of that is to be more open and vulnerable, here it is:

I want to grow more as a person. I want to work hard through therapy and come out feeling great about my body and owning my sexuality. I want to be more open and vulnerable with others, and also become stronger. I want to learn to fight - both literally and figuratively. I want to take care of myself not because I am following rules or want to look good, but because I care about my long-term health and know what is best for my body and want to honor that, even if it means going against the grain. I want to wake up every morning and beast through a killer workout, meditate, and go into each day calm and confident. I want to end each day knowing I gave it my all and honored myself by doing my best work. I want to be bolder and assert my opinions without worrying what others think, to be confident in my intelligence and eloquence, and to embrace feminism and set an example for other girls and women to NEVER shrink down. I want to be still enough to sit and read a book again, to just be - I want to relearn to be truly present. I want to honor my relationships and be a better friend and daughter, and continue to learn that time spent with others is rarely time wasted and will make me successful at what truly matters - living. I want to have FUN and remember that doing so comes from within. Most of all, I want to start the journey to becoming a physician and never forget why I set out to do it or lose my humanity along the way.

One thing I'm grateful for: All of you who have taken the time to read my ramblings over the past couple of years - I think I probably know most of you who read this in real life, and I've learned so much from you and really value having you in my life.

Unless you are Barack Obama or a top neurosurgeon or the Dalai Llama, please do not tell me what I need to do/not do/should do unless I explicitly ask.
